Baby Bouncers

Why Australian Parents Love Baby Bouncers

A quality baby bouncer gives you a few precious minutes of hands-free time, and gives your baby a safe, comfortable place to watch the world during awake time. A baby-led bouncer moves gently with your baby's own kicks and wriggles, so there are no batteries, plugs or motors involved.

For parents navigating the exhausting early months, a bouncer is one of the most-reached-for pieces of baby gear in the house — morning, noon, and witching hour.

How to Choose the Best Baby Bouncer

Newborn support — if you're shopping before your baby arrives, look for a bouncer with a newborn insert that supports your baby's head, neck and body. The Ergobaby Evolve 3-in-1 Bouncer has a removable newborn insert recommended by a paediatric orthopedist, supporting babies from as little as 2.5kg.

Manual or electric — manual, baby-led bouncers respond to your baby's natural movement and are quiet and simple. Electric bouncers and swings provide automated motion. The Evolve is a manual, baby-led bouncer.

Adjustability — height or recline positions let you adjust the seat as your baby grows and for different activities. The Evolve has three height positions you adjust with a step pedal.

Portability and storage — a bouncer that folds flat is easier to move from room to room and pack away. Add a carry bag if you plan to take it to the grandparents' house.

Longevity — the best bouncers grow with your baby. A 3-in-1 design that converts into a toddler seat gives you far more use than a newborn-only bouncer.

Easy cleaning — look for a removable, machine-washable seat cover.

Baby Bouncer Safety

Baby bouncers are designed for supervised awake time only — they are not safe sleep surfaces. If your baby falls asleep in a bouncer, move them to a firm, flat sleep surface such as a cot or bassinet as soon as possible.

Always use the safety harness, always supervise, and always use the bouncer on the floor — never on a raised surface such as a bench, table or bed. For full safe sleep guidance, visit Red Nose Australia at rednose.org.au.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age can babies use a bouncer?
Many bouncers are suitable from birth when used with a newborn insert that supports your baby's head, neck and body. The Ergobaby Evolve's newborn insert supports babies from as little as 2.5kg. Always check the manufacturer's age and weight guidelines.

How long should a baby spend in a bouncer each day?
Use a bouncer for supervised awake time only, and balance it with tummy time, floor play and being held. Variety in position throughout the day is good for your baby's development.

Is a baby bouncer or swing better?
It depends on your baby. A manual bouncer responds to your baby's movements and is quiet and simple. A swing provides consistent automated motion. Some babies prefer one over the other.

Can my baby sleep in a bouncer?
No. Bouncers are for supervised awake time. If your baby falls asleep, move them to a cot or bassinet on their back.
