Newborn Baby Carriers

Our Newborn Carrier Range

Ergobaby Embrace Cozy Newborn Carrier. The Embrace gives you the snug, close feel of a wrap with the simplicity of buckles. It's ready from birth with no insert needed and suits babies from 3.2kg to 11.3kg. A three-buckle system makes it quick to put on, and it offers both facing-in and facing-out carry positions as your baby grows.

Ergobaby Omni Lite Baby Carrier. The Omni Lite is a lightweight, streamlined carrier with one carry position, front inward facing, which is ideal for bonding in the early months. It's ready from birth with no insert and carries your baby from 3.2kg to 15.9kg, up to around 24 months. The breathable mesh suits warmer Australian days, and the straps adjust to fit a wide range of body types, from Petite to 4XL. It's IHDI acknowledged as hip healthy.

Ergobaby Aura Wrap. If you love the soft, close-contact feel of traditional wrapping, the Aura Wrap is a lightweight baby wrap designed for the newborn stage and made easy for beginners to tie.

How to Choose a Newborn Baby Carrier

Carrier or wrap? A buckled newborn carrier like the Embrace or Omni Lite is quick to put on and easy to share between caregivers. A wrap like the Aura is tied around your body for a very close, adjustable fit that many parents find soothing, though it takes a little practice.

How long will you use it? The Embrace is designed for the newborn and early baby months, up to 11.3kg. The Omni Lite carries your baby for longer, up to 15.9kg, which is around two years.

Does it fit you? Comfort matters for the wearer too. The Omni Lite adjusts to fit Petite to 4XL wearers and has lumbar support to help distribute your baby's weight.

Hot weather? Mesh fabric, like the Omni Lite's, lets more air flow between you and your baby, which helps in an Australian summer.

Safe Babywearing for Newborns

Follow the T.I.C.K.S. guidelines every time you carry your baby:

• Tight: the carrier should be snug, with no loose fabric.
• In view at all times: you should always be able to see your baby's face.
• Close enough to kiss: your baby should sit high enough to kiss the top of their head.
• Keep chin off chest: make sure there's space under your baby's chin so their airway stays clear.
• Supported back: your baby's back should be supported in a natural, curved position.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the best carrier for a newborn baby?
The best newborn carrier supports your baby's head, neck, spine and hips from birth without needing an insert. The Ergobaby Embrace is our most recommended option for the newborn stage, and the Omni Lite suits parents who want a simple carrier that lasts to around two years. For a full comparison of carriers across every stage, read our best baby carriers guide.

Do I need an infant insert for a newborn?
Not with the carriers in this range. Some carriers need a separate insert for babies under a certain weight, but the Embrace and Omni Lite are both designed for use from 3.2kg without one.

Can newborns face outwards in a carrier?
Newborns should always face inwards, towards you. Some carriers, like the Embrace, offer a facing-out position for later on. Always check the carrier's instructions for when your baby is ready.

Is there a newborn carrier for plus-size parents?
Yes. The Ergobaby Omni Lite adjusts to fit a wide range of body types, from Petite to 4XL.

What's the difference between a newborn carrier and a wrap?
A carrier uses buckles and a structured seat for a quick, secure fit. A wrap is a long piece of fabric tied around your body, offering a very close fit that takes a little more practice to master.

Is babywearing safe for newborns?
Yes, when you use a carrier designed for newborns and follow the T.I.C.K.S. guidelines. Check your baby's position regularly, especially that their face is visible and their chin is off their chest.
