Pregnancy Pillows

A quality pregnancy pillow earns its space in your home twice over. During pregnancy, it supports your changing body and aching joints through the night. After birth, a combined maternity and nursing pillow becomes one of your most-used breastfeeding and bottle-feeding tools.

Why Use a Pregnancy Pillow?

Sleep during pregnancy is famously elusive, and a well-designed pregnancy pillow addresses many of the most common reasons why.

Supports the growing bump — as your pregnancy progresses, finding a comfortable sleep position becomes harder. A pregnancy pillow provides support under the belly, between the knees or behind the back, helping you stay comfortable on your side.

Eases back and hip discomfort — the extra weight and shifting centre of gravity during pregnancy put strain on the back, hips and pelvis. A long, contoured pillow cushions pressure points and helps keep your body aligned through the night.

Makes side-sleeping easier — Australia's Safer Baby Bundle recommends settling to sleep on your side from 28 weeks of pregnancy. A pregnancy pillow makes side-sleeping more comfortable to maintain. Talk to your midwife or doctor about safe sleep positions in pregnancy.

Reduces tossing and turning — consistent support wherever you settle can mean less discomfort, less repositioning, and longer, more restful sleep stretches.

Types of Pregnancy & Maternity Pillows

Full-length pregnancy pillows — long C-shaped or U-shaped pillows that support the belly, back, hips and knees at once. Ideal if you change position often through the night.

Wedge pregnancy pillows — smaller, targeted pillows for the belly or lower back. Handy if you only need support in one area or have limited bed space.

Combined maternity & nursing pillows — designed to move from pregnancy pillow to feeding pillow after birth. These dual-purpose designs, like the Theraline Original, offer the best long-term value.

Our Most Popular Pregnancy Pillows

Theraline The Original Maternity and Nursing Pillow — provides stable support during pregnancy, with relief for your legs, belly and back, and makes it easy to change sleeping positions. After birth, it gives real comfort during breastfeeding. Available in muslin and bamboo covers, with a spare muslin cover sold separately.

Theraline Plushy Moon Cuddle & Nursing Pillow — a soft, easy-to-carry pregnancy and feeding pillow, ideal as a second pillow for relaxing or using when you're out and about. Its shape also helps taller mums lift baby's head higher during feeds.

From Pregnancy Pillow to Nursing Pillow

Once your baby arrives, a combined maternity and nursing pillow becomes one of the most valuable feeding tools in your newborn kit:

• Familiar comfort — you've already adjusted to its shape and support.
• Postpartum support — your lower back and arms still need support during the early weeks of breastfeeding or bottle feeding.
• Cost-effective — one pillow covers two life stages, instead of buying a separate nursing pillow.

Always supervise your baby when using a pillow for feeding, and never let your baby sleep on a pregnancy or nursing pillow. Pair your pillow with a nursing chair for a comfortable feeding setup, and browse our nursing pillows.

How to Choose the Right Pregnancy Pillow

Consider your sleep position — if you change positions often, a full-length C or U shape offers support on both sides without rearranging.

Think about your specific discomfort — back pain, hip pain and belly support can each benefit from slightly different shapes. Choose a pillow you can position where you need it most.

Factor in bed size — full-length pregnancy pillows take up significant space, which is worth considering if you share a bed.

Plan for after birth — if you want to keep using your pillow, choose a combined maternity and nursing pillow.

Check the cover — a removable, washable cover is important given how much time you'll spend with your pillow, and later with your baby.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best pregnancy pillow in Australia?
The best pregnancy pillow depends on your sleep position, your specific discomfort, and whether you want it to double as a feeding pillow. The Theraline Original Maternity and Nursing Pillow is our most popular choice because it supports you through pregnancy and into breastfeeding.

Can I use my pregnancy pillow as a nursing pillow after birth?
Yes, if it's designed for both. Combined maternity and nursing pillows like the Theraline Original are made to support you during pregnancy and then help position your baby during feeds.

When should I start using a pregnancy pillow?
Many women find a pregnancy pillow useful from the second trimester, as the bump grows and side-sleeping becomes more important. Some start earlier if they have early pregnancy discomfort or existing back issues.

What is the difference between a pregnancy pillow and a regular pillow?
A pregnancy pillow is longer and shaped to support the belly, back, hips and knees at the same time, in a way a standard pillow can't. Many also double as a nursing pillow after birth.

Are pregnancy pillows worth it?
For most women experiencing pregnancy-related sleep disruption, yes. A pregnancy pillow can make side-sleeping much more comfortable, and a combined design keeps being useful after birth.

Can my baby sleep on a pregnancy or nursing pillow?
No. These pillows are for supervised feeding and cuddles only. Always place your baby on their back in a cot or bassinet to sleep.
