Baby Monitors

A quality monitor is one of the most reassuring pieces of baby tech a new parent can own — it gives you the freedom to get on with life while staying connected to your baby's sounds and movements in real time. Whether you want smart wearable tracking, a reliable video feed, or a simple audio device that does the basics brilliantly, you'll find the right fit here.

Why Every Australian Family Needs One

• Peace of mind — the biggest reason parents invest in one at all. Whether your baby is napping or settling for the night, you can respond quickly to any sign of waking or distress.
• Freedom to move around the house — without one, many parents feel tethered to the nursery during naps. A reliable device lets you fold laundry, prepare meals, or simply rest, while staying connected.
• Better sleep for parents — knowing you'll be alerted to anything unusual helps many parents relax and sleep more soundly, rather than waking repeatedly to check.
• Visibility without disturbance — a video feed in particular lets you check on a sleeping baby without opening the door or turning on a light.

Which Type Is Right for Your Family?

• Audio — the simplest, most affordable option. Sends sound from your baby's room to a parent unit and alerts you to crying or stirring. Good if you want core coverage without extra features.
• Video — adds a visual feed alongside audio, via a dedicated screen or app, so you can see your baby's position and general wellbeing without entering the room.
• Smart — the newest category. Devices like Owlet's go beyond audio and video, tracking sleep patterns and physiological data such as heart rate and oxygen levels via a wearable sock or band — an extra layer of awareness many parents value in the newborn months.

Owlet — Smart Monitoring Technology

Owlet is one of the most recognised names in this space, known for pioneering wearable tech that goes beyond sound and vision.

Owlet Dream Sock — a soft, wearable sock-style sensor worn on the foot during sleep. It tracks heart rate and oxygen saturation, sending real-time data to a connected app, and alerts parents if readings fall outside expected ranges. It's become one of the most talked-about additions to the modern nursery.

Why parents choose Owlet: wearable tracking gives a fuller picture beyond just sound and movement; app connectivity means you can check in from anywhere in the house, or out; it's designed with new-parent anxiety in mind for extra reassurance in the early months; and the design is sleek enough to fit a contemporary nursery.

Beaba — Thoughtfully Designed Video Monitoring

Beaba brings a design-led approach, combining genuine functionality with the same intelligent philosophy behind their whole product range. Expect a clear, high-resolution video feed, two-way audio so you can soothe your baby by voice, temperature and humidity sensors on select models, night vision, and a dedicated parent unit that doesn't rely solely on home WiFi.

Why parents choose Beaba: a trusted, design-focused brand already loved across their feeding and bath ranges, video quality and connectivity that hold up in daily use, and an aesthetic that fits a modern nursery.

How to Choose

• Consider the reassurance you're after — audio alone may be enough; video adds visual confirmation; Owlet's wearable tech adds the most detailed physiological data.
• Think about your home layout — for larger or multi-storey homes, check the stated range between the nursery and wherever you spend most of your time.
• Factor in WiFi reliance — some devices use a dedicated signal, others (including Owlet's app-based system) rely on home WiFi or Bluetooth. Weigh this against your home's connectivity.
• Decide if wearable tracking suits you — it offers extra data, but remember these are consumer devices for reassurance and convenience, not medical devices, and shouldn't replace standard safe sleep practices.
• Check battery life, particularly for video models, and whether the camera needs constant power (most do, for reliability).

Safety & Best Practice

• None of this replaces safe sleep practices — always follow Red Nose Australia's guidelines: baby on their back, on a firm flat surface, free from loose bedding.
• Keep cords well away from the cot and out of reach to prevent entanglement.
• Mount cameras securely, angled for a clear view without sitting directly above where baby could reach.
• Wearables provide extra awareness, not medical oversight — use alongside, never instead of, standard safe sleep practices.

FAQs

What's the best option in Australia?
It depends what you're after — Owlet suits parents wanting wearable physiological tracking, while Beaba offers excellent, reliable video with thoughtful design. Compare the range to find your fit.

Do I need video, or is audio enough?
Personal preference — audio covers the basics for many families, while video adds visual confirmation, especially handy for checking a stirring baby without opening the door.

Is the Owlet Sock a medical device?
No — it's a consumer wearable offering extra awareness around heart rate and oxygen levels during sleep. It's not a substitute for medical advice or standard safe sleep practices.

What's the difference between Owlet and Beaba?
Owlet specialises in wearable smart tracking; Beaba focuses on high-quality video with clear visuals, two-way audio and nursery-focused design.

Do these work without WiFi?
Depends on the model — some Beaba options use a dedicated signal that skips home WiFi entirely, while Owlet's app-based system needs WiFi or Bluetooth to function.

How far away can I be and still stay connected?
Varies by model — WiFi-connected smart devices can typically be checked from anywhere with an internet connection, while dedicated-signal units are limited to a set range around your home.

Are they safe to use?
Yes, when set up correctly — keep cords and cameras out of reach, and remember none of this replaces fundamental safe sleep practices.
