Why Australian Parents Choose to Babywear

Babywearing — carrying your baby in a carrier or wrap has been practised across cultures for thousands of years, and the research behind it is compelling. A quality ergonomic baby carrier keeps your baby close, supports healthy physical and emotional development, and gives parents the hands-free freedom to move through daily life without putting baby down.

Key benefits of babywearing include:

• Bonding and attachment — skin-to-skin closeness supports the release of oxytocin and deepens the parent-baby bond.
• Settling and soothing — the warmth and rhythm of a caregiver's body is deeply calming for newborns and young babies.
• Hip healthy development — an ergonomic carrier supporting the M position encourages healthy hip socket development.
• Hands-free convenience — babywearing gives parents freedom to move, work, and care for older children while keeping baby close.
• Fourth trimester support — babywearing is one of the most effective tools for the first three months of a baby's life outside the womb.
• Developmental benefits — babies who are carried regularly show benefits in language development, motor skills, and emotional regulation.

How to Choose a Baby Carrier in Australia

Newborn or older baby?

For the newborn stage, look for a baby carrier for newborns with built-in head and neck support or a removable newborn insert — such as the Ergobaby Embrace or Omni Lite, which is ready from birth with no insert required. For older babies and toddlers, a structured carrier with multiple carry positions, like the Omni Classic offers the best versatility and long-term value.

Soft structured carrier or hip seat?

A soft structured carrier (SSC) uses buckles and adjustable straps for a quick, secure fit — ideal for daily use and sharing between caregivers. A hip seat carrier, like the Hippychick Hipseat or Ergobaby Alta, offers a quicker, more casual carry for toddlers who want to be up and down frequently throughout the day.

Which carry positions do you need?

Entry-level carriers typically offer front inward-facing carry. Premium all-position carriers like the Ergobaby Omni Classic offer multiple positions — front inward, front outward, hip carry, and back carry — giving you maximum flexibility as your baby develops and your carrying needs change.

What about Australia's climate?

Australia's varied climate is worth factoring into your carrier choice. For warmer states and summer months, look for carriers made with breathable mesh fabrics — the Ergobaby Omni Classic in mesh is a popular choice for Queensland and WA parents.

Hip healthy certification

Always choose a carrier endorsed by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI) as hip healthy. This means the carrier has been independently assessed by orthopaedic specialists and confirmed to support the ergonomic M position — knees higher than bottom, thighs spread, hips bent which promotes healthy hip development during the critical first two years of life.

Baby Carrier Safety: What Every Australian Parent Needs to Know

Safe babywearing follows the T.I.C.K.S. guidelines:

• Tight — the carrier should be snug with no loose fabric.
• In view at all times — you should always be able to see your baby's face.
• Close enough to kiss — baby should be close enough that you can kiss their head.
• Keep chin off chest — baby's chin should never rest on their chest as this can restrict breathing.
• Supported back — baby's back should be fully supported in a natural curved position.

Always ensure your baby is positioned in the carrier correctly before moving, and check positioning regularly throughout the carry. For full safe babywearing guidance, refer to the Australian Babywearing Association.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best baby carrier in Australia?

The Ergobaby Omni Classic is consistently rated as one of the best baby carriers in Australia for its versatility, ergonomic design, IHDI hip healthy endorsement, and longevity from newborn to toddler. For the newborn stage specifically, the Ergobaby Embrace is our most recommended carrier. Browse the full range above to find your perfect match.

Can newborns use a baby carrier?

Yes — provided the carrier is specifically designed or adjusted for newborn use and supports the baby's head, neck, and spine correctly. The Ergobaby Embrace and Omni Lite is newborn-ready from birth with no insert required.

What is a hip healthy baby carrier?

A hip healthy baby carrier is one endorsed by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI) as supporting the ergonomic M position — where baby's knees sit higher than their bottom and thighs are spread wide. This position supports healthy hip socket development and is recommended by paediatric orthopaedic specialists. Our Ergobaby carriers are IHDI hip healthy endorsed.

What is the difference between a baby carrier and a hip seat?

A baby carrier uses a structured system of buckles and adjustable straps to support your baby fully, front or back. A hip seat, like the Hippychick Hipseat, provides a supportive shelf for your toddler to sit on at your hip, offering a quicker, more casual carry for on-and-off use throughout the day.

How long can I babywear each day?

There is no strict daily limit on babywearing — many parents babywear for several hours a day throughout the first year and beyond. The key is that both parent and baby are comfortable, the carrier fits correctly, and safe babywearing guidelines are followed. Always check baby's positioning regularly and take breaks if you experience discomfort.

Are baby carriers safe for newborns?

Yes, when used correctly with a carrier designed or adjusted for newborn use. Always follow the T.I.C.K.S. safe babywearing guidelines, ensure baby's airway is clear and visible, and check that their chin is not resting on their chest. The Australian Babywearing Association offers resources and support for new babywearers at babywearing.org.au.
